Ancient and New Working Together
Debra Self lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico and has been a Chinese brush painter for 21 years. She has studied Chinese brush painting, both in the United States with master calligrapher Sun Wuk Kim, as well as in China at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou. She has taught in China on two occasions and has a passion for Chinese culture. She is a member of the Art of Ink in America, International Chinese Calligraphic Art & Chinese Ink Painters Society and Ja Yu Kuan chapter of the American Artists of Chinese Brush Painting. She is a member of the BOD of the Santa Fe Studio Arts Collective and the past president of the board of Marin Society of Artists.
She has an undergraduate degree in chemistry and two graduate degrees in law. She recently completed a Master of Arts in Eastern Classics with a language focus in ancient Mandarin.
She has exhibited her award-winning work in juried exhibitions in California, New York, New Jersey, France, China, Thailand and Australia.
The focus of her work is contemporary Chinese calligraphy and, on the more whimsical side, cats. She uses traditional brush and bamboo pen tools with ink, shuen paper and mixed media to create original work within the traditions of the medium.
